John Delacour began trading in 1974 as a piano restorer and french-polisher.  In 1981 he moved to premises in Poole taking over from an existing second-hand piano shop and set up workshops there and a showroom which at first displayed only restored and rebuilt pianos. Eventually new pianos were added to the stock and Delacour Pianos specialised in Kawai and Schimmel and Grotrian-Steinweg pianos.  The rebuilding of high quality grand pianos remained the mainstay of the business.

In 1984 the manufacture of covered strings for pianos was added to our activities and new standards of quality were established.  In 1990 the retail side of the business was discontinued and we continue to produce bass strings for the piano trade as well as doing major restorations and rebuilds, almost exclusively of grand pianos.

The pianos he likes to work with most are Kirkman, Brinsmead and Lipp but there are many other fine pianos that are consistently better made, more interesting and more durable than the fashionable makes.

A project is under way to put into production a grand piano of remarkable originality, in which will be blended the finest of the old and the very latest of the new as regards both materials and design.

In July 2007 after over 25 years in Parkstone, where space was inadequate for the projects in hand, a redundant grain silo at Deverel Farm was specially converted into new workshops with a floor space of 1,400 square feet on two floors…
